I want to thank all those members of Fianna Fáil in Dublin Bay South who helped ensure that the marriage equality amendment was passed. It is particularly pleasing that our constituency recorded the highest Yes vote in the country.
The campaigning by people who were not members of political parties was one of the striking features of this referendum. They deserve enormous credit.
However, the campaign that Fianna Fáil ran in Dublin Bay South was also very important in persuading voters, particularly Fianna Fáil supporters, to support the proposal.
I want to thank all those members who canvassed with me door to door, at Luas stations and shopping centres throughout the constituency. In particular I want to thank those people who helped deliver 2,500 personal letters to voters in the last week of the campaign. This was a huge task but one which was very effective and which made a strong impact on the voters we most needed to reach.
