Statement by Fianna Fail Cllr Jim O’Callaghan: On Grafton Street this afternoon (Thursday Jan 8th) a Dublin City Council vehicle used by workers from the waste services division who were carrying out a public service for Dubliners was clamped. It was not causing an obstruction to traffic and the workers were clearly carrying out their duties as called upon to do so for the benefit of the public as they are paid to do.
This shows only one thing to me – that the clamping company involved, Dublin Street Parking Services – is motivated by profit and has failed to deliver on their promise to provide ‘the enforcement service in a balanced way … and in a practical manner’ which they claim they do as is stated on their website www.dsps.ie.
I am asking DSPS management to explain the actions of their clamping staff in this particular case and I will raise the matter with City Council officials. DSPS claims it operates a ‘firm but fair’ policy – this situation is unfair and too firm and hard-working Council staff that are carrying out a public service, should not be penalised in this way. It only serves to drain already depleted resources from Dublin City Council in the form of a de-clamping fee, immobilised vehicles and frustrated workers.
